Captain Tony Goings was born and raised in Mansfield Ohio, in 1960. In the mid 1970s, his family relocated to Georgia and he attended the Greene County High School in Greensboro, Georgia from which he graduated in 1979. Upon graduating from High School, he enlisted in the United States Army as a Correctional Specialist / M.P. (Military Police). He served his country for six years (3 active/3 inactive) and he received an Honorable Discharge.
Captain Goings began his Law Enforcement career in 1982 with the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office as a Deputy Sheriff. He attended and graduated from the Northeast Georgia Police Academy in 1983. After three years of service, he was promoted to the rank of sergeant.
In 1987-1989, Captain Goings opted to further his Law Enforcement career path and accepted employment with an organization known as P.L.E. (Professional Law Enforcement-Dayton, Ohio) as an Undercover Narcotics Investigator. After extensive training, he assisted corporate and government agencies nationwide with the illegal use of, and the trafficking of narcotics in the work place. His two-year commitment with P.L.E., resulted in the arrest and conviction of several suspected or known drug offenders.
In 1989, Captain Goings returned to the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office as a Deputy Sheriff and worked his way back up the ladder. During his thirty (35+) years of employment with the Sheriff’s Office, thirty (30+) of those years, he has served in a supervisory capacity. He has worn many hats during his tenure including Shift Sergeant, Classification Supervisor, Transition Team Member, Department Recruiter and Shift Commander / Lieutenant, and in 2012, he was promoted to the rank of Captain as the Support Unit Commander, and he maintained this position for approximately six (6) years.
Currently (December 2nd, 2018), Captain Goings was reassigned as the Operations / Assistant Jail Commander. Additionally, he is the Team Commander for the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office Color / Honor Guard Team, and the Chairperson for the Sheriff’s Office Employee Awards Committee. Also he successfully completed the Georgia Department of Corrections Tactical Squad Basic Course (Riot Control) as a Squad Leader. To date, he has attained several certificates of achievement in regard to his chosen profession.
In 1992, he was the Athens Rotary Club Sherm Applebaum Award Recipient and in 2009, he was presented with the Athens Rotary Club Sherm Applebaum Certificate of Recognition for his outstanding contribution to the field of law enforcement. In 2006, he was the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office Sworn Employee of the Year. In 2019, he graduated from the Evelyn C. Neely Leadership Class/Program. Also in 2013, he obtained his Associates or Arts degree in Criminal Justice, in 2015, he obtained his Bachelors of Science degree in Psychology (with a focus on behavior), and in his quest for higher education, in 2018, Captain Goings attained his Master of Science in Psychology as well while attending the University of Phoenix. Currently, Captain Goings is aggressively pursuing his PhD in Forensic Psychology at Walden University.
