Chief Deputy Cole’s career in law enforcement began with the Athens-Clarke County Police Department in 1994. He was promoted to Senior Police Officer in 1998. Later that same year, he was transferred from the uniform patrol division to the criminal investigation division where he was assigned to investigate sexual assaults, child abuse, and juvenile crimes. In 2001, he transferred to the Clarke County Sheriff's Office at the promoted rank of Captain, in charge of the Field Section which includes all field operations. As Captain of the Field Section, he established an evidence and property room to account for property seized by the Sheriff’s Office, developed contractual agreements for the transportation of involuntary committal patients and extradition of inmates to private companies, served as the program administrator for several projects including the courthouse security project and saliport enclosure project, and drafted several policies related to the operational responsibilities of the Sheriff’s Office. In addition to these achievements, he has obtained specialized training in the areas of courthouse security, homeland security, crisis intervention, use of force, and management & supervision. Chief Deputy Cole was promoted to Chief Deputy on February 2, 2014.

Chief Deputy Cole earned his BS degree in Health / Physical Education from the University of Georgia in 1991. He is a graduate of the Georgia Law Enforcement Command College attaining a Master's degree in Public Safety Administration from Columbus State University in 2017. He is a certified POST general instructor.
