Rivers Alive Volunteer Registration Underway

Site sign-ups are up and running for the 2019 Rivers Alive event THIS Saturday, October 5th. Rivers Alive is Georgia's annual volunteer river clean-up event that encourages civic involvement in the preservation of Georgia's precious water resources. Our waterways provide us with fresh drinking water, important wildlife habitat, and recreational opportunities that serve as a respite from our busy day-to-day lives.

Last year, 276 volunteers came out to collect over 3.12 tons of trash, 71,800 pounds of metal recycling, and 164 tires during the event. This year, there are a variety of wet and dry clean-up options as well as several kid-friendly sites, so bring your friends and family out for a great morning of volunteer service in Athens.

Volunteer check-in starts at 8:00 am at Sandy Creek Nature Center. Breakfast and entertainment will be provided as we gather for the cleanup, and groups will disperse to their individual sites around 9:15 a.m. Volunteers should bring a reusable water bottle, wear long pants and close-toed shoes, and come prepared to get dirty. For more information and to register for a clean-up site, visit www.accgov.com/riversalive. We hope to see you there!

Imagine A Day Without Water Postcards from 2018

Imagine a Day Without Water: October 23, 2019

Imagine waking up one day and having no water to drink or make coffee with. No water to shower, flush the toilet, or do laundry with. Hospitals would have to close without water, firefighters couldn’t put out fires, and farmers couldn’t water their crops.

Many of us take water for granted every day. Imagine a Day Without Water is an annual day to raise awareness and educate our community about the value of water. To celebrate, ACC Stormwater and ACC Water Conservation are visiting several local middle schools to talk about this critically important resource and what we can do to protect it. Students will be designing educational postcards that will be mailed out to lucky Athens residents.

We encourage everyone to share why they love water on social media using the hashtag #ValueWater. Tag @accstormwater or @lilyannephibian on Instagram with a photo of you enjoying water in some way! For more information, visit www.imagineadaywithoutwater.org or www.thinkatthesink.com.
