Solid Waste Downtown Collections Public Meeting on April 16

Clayton Street Improvement Project Update - Aug. 3, 2018

Streetscape Input - Public Meetings on Aug. 9 & 13 + Online Survey

Two public meetings are set for providing input on the streetscape design phase of the East Clayton Street Improvement Project. The meetings, which follow up on meetings earlier this year that provided opportunities for public input on the project, will give attendees a chance to select features important to them through a visual preference survey.

The drop-in public meetings are:

Thursday, August 9
2:00-4:00 p.m.

Monday, August 13
6:00-8:00 p.m.

Both will be held in the Michael Bros. Building Mezzanine at
320 East Clayton Street (corner of East Clayton Street & North Jackson Street)

The online survey will be posted after the first meeting and available online through August 17 at accgov.com/clayton. We'll also send out an update once it is online.

Pre-Dig Phase for 1st Block Complete

ACC Transportation & Public Works Department's Streets & Drainage crews have completed the Pre-Dig Phase for the first block of the project approximately two weeks ahead of schedule. Although private utility companies may do some work in this area in-between, ACCGOV's Streets & Drainage crews will not return to install stormwater pipe in this block until January 2019. Streetscape improvements will then follow beginning in April 2019.

Some changes to the design for the stormwater system on the second block between College Avenue and North Jackson Street will add some additional time to its timeframe and take away from some of the schedule savings. Even so, crews are tentatively scheduled to still be ahead of the original schedule after completing the next block barring any complications during digging.

Note that only the map of the current block reflects the date changes (see below or at accgov.com/clayton). Maps for other blocks will not be updated until closer to their actual work to make sure they are accurate. But know that crews will keep moving on as they finish work in areas.

Block 1 - N. Lumpkin Street to College Avenue - Complete

Continuing Working through Thursdays

After a positive trial run of fully working through Thursdays and then allowing for re-paving and repair on Friday mornings to fully open up parking and all lanes on the weekends, crews will continue to use this schedule. In some cases, roads may still open on Thursday nights depending on the timing of work stoppage points for the day.

By the end of Thursday afternoons, crews will shrink the fencing to only those areas needed to be repaired and have asphalt work completed on Friday morning. They are expected to be out of the area and have roads re-opened by 11:00 a.m. on Fridays. This should allow work to go more quickly and finish the upcoming block sooner.

Current Phase: Pre-Dig for Stormwater System

The Pre-Dig phase for the Clayton Street Improvements started Monday, June 18 when crews started digging trenches for the future stormwater system. Actual installation of the stormwater system will begin in January 2019.

The goal is to resolve any issues such as conflicts with other underground items earlier in the process so that the actual installation of the system goes quicker.

  • Work started near N. Lumpkin Street on June 18 and will move block-by-block to Thomas Street until November 2018
  • Crews will work one side of a block at a time (south side and then the north side)
  • Construction work will take place Monday - Thursday from 6:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. (except for any holidays) and Friday mornings from 6:00-~11:00 a.m. By Thursday evenings, the fenced area will shrink to enclose only the needed areas for repair. Repaving and repair will take place on Friday mornings to reopen all parking spaces and lanes.*
  • Work will take place in a rolling work zone of up to approximately 200' at a time and require lane closures and parking space closures of 10-15 spaces at a time.

As work is completed, areas will be re-opened as soon as feasible. All lanes and spaces are expected to be re-opened at the end of each pre-dig work week by Friday mornings.*

Detailed block-by-block/side of street maps and more information are available at www.accgov.com/clayton. Additionally, staff continue to visit businesses in the affected areas to provide maps and answer questions about the project.

* - If weather conditions prevent placing asphalt, closures and work days/times may be extended before an area can re-open.

Additional information and upcoming dates that relate to the Clayton Street Area project will continue to be sent through this listserve and linked at www.accgov.com/clayton.
