Solid Waste Downtown Collections Public Meeting on April 16

Clayton Street Improvements Preliminary Plans Approved

The preliminary plans for the Clayton Street Improvements were approved by the Mayor & Commission at their Tuesday, June 5 Regular Session.

These plans set the curb lines and street widths, which allow staff to begin work on the stormwater system, which must be installed largely underground before the streetscape is installed.

The approval also set the general schedule for the project:

  • Pre-Dig Phase (Stormwater) - June - Nov. 2018
  • Utility Relocations - August 2018 - April 2019
  • Stormwater System Installation - January 2019 - March 2020 (August 2019 - January 2020 break)
  • Streetscape Installation - April 2019 - August 2020 (November 2019 - April 2020 break)

Pre-Dig Starts Monday, June 18 for Stormwater System on South Side of Block Between N. Lumpkin & College

The Pre-Dig phase will begin on Monday, June 18 when the ACC Transportation & Public Works Department crews start creating the areas for the stormwater system to be installed. They won't actually put in pipe yet - that is a later phase - but instead make cuts and identify underground conflicts with utilities as they go. The goal is to resolve any issues earlier in the process so that the actual installation of the system goes quicker.

Crews will work one side of a block at a time (south side and north side) starting at N. Lumpkin Street and working block-by-block to Thomas Street. Work will only take place Monday - Thursday from 6:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Work will take place in a rolling work zone of up to approximately 200' at a time and require lane closures and parking space closures of 10-15 spaces at a time.

As work is completed, areas will be re-opened as soon as feasible. Additionally, all lanes and spaces are expected to be re-opened at the end of each pre-dig work week on Thursday evenings for the weekend.

Detailed block-by-block/side of street maps and more information are available at www.accgov.com/clayton. Additionally, staff will visit businesses in the affected areas to provide maps and answer questions about the project before the pre-dig begins.

More Public Input Opportunities for Streetscape Design

While the preliminary plans for the curb lines and stormwater system were approved, the Clayton Street Improvements project will solicit additional public input on the streetscape (the above-ground portion) design in the coming months.

This process will include a visual preference survey, in which pictures, renderings, or drawings of specific streetscape features are shown for feedback. Additionally, the Athens Cultural Affairs Commission will also solicit more public input about the public art used in this area.

Look for more information about the public input opportunities soon.

Additional information and upcoming dates that relate to the Clayton Street Area project will continue to be sent through this listserve and linked at www.accgov.com/clayton.
