About the Juror: Each year the Lyndon House Arts Center invites an esteemed member of the arts community to Athens to view, judge and choose works by local and area artists for the anchor exhibition, the Annual Juried Exhibition.  We are pleased to announce Mr. Carter Foster, Curator of Drawing at the Whitney Museum of American Art as our Juror for the 40th Annual Juried Exhibition.  In a museum career spanning twenty years, Mr. Carter Foster has specialized in the history of drawing and the continuities of artistic practice in Europe and America from the Renaissance to the present, and has organized dozens of exhibitions covering this range. He has held curatorial positions at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, where he is currently the Steven and Ann Ames Curator of Drawing. A specialist on the work of Edward Hopper, he recently organized the widely acclaimed exhibition Hopper Drawing and edited and co-authored its accompanying catalogue. He is currently part of a four-member curatorial team developing the inaugural collection display for the Whitney Museum’s new building opening in the spring of 2015.

and is on view thru May 2, 2015.  The Opening Reception will be on March 5, 2015
from 6:00 – 8:00 pm

Happy New Year

Happy New Year

2015 marks a wonderful anniversary, the Lyndon House Arts Center’s 40th year.  During the Arts Center’s first 20 years, the exhibition program was established with the first juried show representing the fine artists of Athens; a civic arts program was developed and established to include quality arts education, outreach and partnerships in the arts. The second 20 years brought the building of the new facility through the community's votes and the SPLOST program in Athens-Clarke County; the Ware-Lyndon House was restored to be one of the finest historic house museums in the region and with a dedicated Foundation Board, staff and the Leisure Services division behind us, the Lyndon House Arts Center is prime for the next stage of growth, continued excellence and professionalism in the arts.

For the 40th year, we have many new programs we are excited to launch.  For example, we are featuring youth and teen workshops in stop-motion animation, chess set building and “Swag My Ride” in time for the Twilight Bike Races.  For adults, life drawing classes, a series of professional practice lunch lectures in topics such as website building, social media and gallery etiquette and “Draw Table”, a community drawing event.

The exhibition line-up is stellar, starting with the anchor show, the 40th Juried Exhibition with juror Carter Foster, Curator of Drawing at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.  The summer exhibit, “Where We Live Work and Play” brings sculptural and kinetic works investigating playful activities, working tasks, as well as The Home Show, a collection of artist built and designed birdhouses.  The fall brings in exhibits investigating drawing and mark-making by members of the Women’s Caucus for the Arts and a traveling show of contemporary Southeastern Indian art organized by UGA Professor Jace Weaver.

The Lyndon House Arts Center’s success is largely contributed to the dedication of the Athens-Clarke County citizens.  We can’t do it without you!  Thank you for all your past, continued and future support!

Happiest of New Years.  We look forward to 2015, and celebrating the Lyndon House Arts Center’s 40th year of Art in Downtown Athens.
