This service provides responses to questions concerning lawn, garden, and tree issues. Questions are addressed over the phone, through email, in person, or through a variety of gardening presentations that occur during the year.
This area also administers the Athens Area Master Gardener Program, Junior Master Gardener Programs at local elementary schools, and coordinates environmental education through a Master Naturalist Program. Additionally, pesticide certification credits are available to applicants. Educational portions of the Athens Farmers Market are also administered by this service area. Free Monthly Gardening Class
From February through November, Athens-Clarke County Extension holds a free gardening class each month. Taught by Master Gardener Extension Volunteers, these classes take place in the auditorium of the Athens-Clarke County Library (2025 Baxter St.) from 6-7:30 pm. Intended for gardeners of all experience and skill levels, the monthly classes will cover a variety of topics such as seasonal vegetable gardening, composting, beekeeping, and more. Registration is required.
The next class in the series, "Rain Gardening", will be held on Wednesday, September 11th from 6-7:30 pm. This presentation will cover the benefits of rain gardens, design and maintenance, and how to select the best locations and suitable plants for your garden. Please register by Tuesday, September 10.
We're excited to announce that the October class will be held at the new ACC Extension office located at 275 Cleveland Rd., Bogart, GA (just past Georgia Square Mall). The next class in the series, "Blueberries and Figs" will be held on Wednesday, October 9th from 6-7:30 pm. Join us for an informative presentation for the home gardener on growing these delicious fruits including site selection, soil requirements, fertilization, watering and trouble shooting.
