The Urban Land Institute (ULI) of Atlanta recognized the Athens Multimodal Transportation Center with one of its most prestigious honors – the "Development of Excellence" award. The Atlanta District Council of ULI recognized four out of nine finalists as "Development of Excellence" recipients at the annual awards dinner on September 18. The ULI Development of Excellence awards were judged based on the following criteria: land use, sustainability, creativity in organization/management, smart growth, innovation in design and architecture, filling a community need, overcoming obstacles in development, and the use of public/private partnerships.
Atlanta-based architecture firm Niles Bolton Associates worked with the Unified Government of Athens-Clarke County to provide programming, architecture, and interior design services for the Multimodal Transportation Center.
NEW! The Multimodal Transportation Center is a Bronze Award winner in the Brick Industry Association's 2008 Brick in Architecture Awards.
The competition judges and awards the creative and technical use of the brick. The Multimodal Transportation Center was one of only five projects nationally to receive this award in the Municipal/Government category.
Butch McDuffie, the Director of the Athens Transit System since 2001, is the recipient of the 2008 Classic Host Award. The award, presented by the Athens Conventiona & Visitors Bureau, recognizes a local individual who is committed to bringing to Athens a new convention, meeting, or event generating a significant economic impact.
In November 2007, Butch McDuffie successfully hosted over 250 members of the Georgia Transit Association to Athens, all of who committed to revisiting Athens in 2008. Additionally, McDuffie worked beyond his department, encouraging tradeshows to choose Athens as their meeting site.
Aside from his commitment to increased tourism in Athens-Clarke County, as Director of Athens Transit System, McDuffie helps move 1.6 million people in and around Athens-Clarke County annually. Congratulations to Butch McDuffie, Athens's latest Classic Host!

The Multimodal Transportation Center has received a national merit award from the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC). An IDEAS2 merit award for teamwork, coordination, collaboration, excellence, and innovation in the use of structural steel was presented to the Unified Government based upon six criteria. The annual awards are judged by a panel of design and construction industry professionals and awarded in three categories based on construction cost. Find out more at the AISC Web site.
The Multimodal Transportation Center links Athens Transit System vehicles, University of Georgia buses, bicycles, taxis, and pedestrian facilities into a single hub. The facility also serves as a community bridge, linking downtown Athens with the North Oconee River Greenway. The project was citizen-funded through the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) IV and 2000 programs. It is comprised of glass, brick, wood, and cast stone, with exposed recycled steel to capture the industrial look of the region and the warehouse district east of downtown Athens.
The transportation center features 9,500 square feet of interior space and a bus transfer facility that includes 17 covered bus bays and climate controlled waiting areas, restrooms, a passenger drop off area, a ticket/information booth, bicycle storage, and provisions for a future commuter rail platform. A pedestrian bridge connects the bus transfer facility to downtown Athens and a parking garage. The 646-space garage is shared with the Classic Center, the Athens convention and performing arts facility.
