NEW! D.A.R.E. America appointed Sheriff Ira Edwards, Jr. to the D.A.R.E. Executive
Law Enforcement Advisory Board (E.L.E.A.B.) on August 28, 2008. The
E.L.E.A.B. is a group of elite law enforcement and government executives that
meet to advise D.A.R.E. America regarding the needs of local, state, and federal
government in providing the best training for D.A.R.E. Officers, arming them with
the “gold standard” in prevention education curricula to teach America’s kids
while maintaining a climate in the school that is safe.
NEW! The Clarke County Sheriff's Office is sponsoring the 8th Annual Charity Motorcycle Ride on Saturday, October 4, 2008. The event benefits the Georgia Sheriff's Youth Homes and Boys and Girls Club of Athens. The ride begins at 1:00 p.m. at Sandy Creek Park. The cost to ride is $30 per bike, which includes a t-shirt, BBQ meal, and door prizes. Registration is 11:30 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. at the park before the ride. NEW! May 15, 2008 is Peace Officers Memorial Day. Athens-Clarke County has 3 names engraved on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Wall in Washington D. C. honoring officers lost in the line of duty. Police Officer Herman Karl Stein died from a gunshot wound suffered while struggling with a burglar on November 20, 1936, Police Corporal Thomas Earl Bowles died from a cerebral hemorrhage suffered while struggling with a DUI driver on January 16, 1985, and Sheriff's Lieutenant James Clark died in a motor vehicle accident by a person driving under the influence of alcohol while he and another deputy were transporting an inmate to attend a funeral on May 24, 2000.
The
Sheriff’s Office passed its assessment of June 15, 2007 for Agency
State Certification, making it one of only ten current Sheriff’s Offices in the State of Georgia to achieve and maintain State Certification.

The Clarke County Sheriff’s
Office exists to provide services for the protection of life and
property and the
preservation of the public peace in Athens-Clarke County. The Sheriff
is responsible for the physical health and welfare of all inmates
in the jail, and the management of their property and money.
The
Sheriff’s Office
serves criminal warrants, civil papers, and subpoenas, executes
evictions, transports prisoners to court,
extradites prisoners from other states to court, provides security
for State, Superior, Municipal, Magistrate
and Juvenile Courts, Jurors, Clarke County Courthouse, City Hall
and the Courthouse Parking Deck.
The Sheriff’s Office also
serves as a source of information, providing lectures and programs
to community groups, civic associations and school children through
the D.A.R.E. and Jr. Deputy Programs.Our goal is to protect life
and property, preserve the public peace and operate all the divisions
of the Sheriff’s Office efficiently and to enhance our awareness
and educational programs for the public and for
