triangle NEW! Athens-Clarke County government is involved in two national competitions, the Change the World, Start with ENERGY STAR Campaign and the Drive $marter Challenge.

The Change the World campaign encourages energy efficiency. Counties across the country collect pledges from its employees and citizens to use energy efficient light bulbs and make efforts to save energy in other ways, like power managing computers, choosing ENERGY STAR appliances, or properly programming their home thermostats. As a reward for helping reduce energy, Office Depot will offer each individual who takes the pledge a 10% discount on its new Office Depot Green Brand Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs.

Participants register by obtaining a pledge sheet, which are located in the publication rack along College Avenue at City Hall or online.

The Drive $marter Challenge is a fuel-efficiency campaign launched by The Wal-Mart Foundation and its partners to help consumers lower their gasoline costs by using less. The campaign offers tips and resources (in English and Spanish) to help participants save gas and money. The goal of the campaign is to keep more money in drivers’ pockets and to reduce the number of costly trips to the pump.

For more information about Athens-Clarke County’s energy conservation plan and participation in these campaigns, contact Dick Field, ACC Environmental Coordinator, at 706-613-3530.
