Our Community: Works by Students of the CCSD (November 6, 2011-January 16, 2012)

Nearly 200 works by young artists in the Clarke County School District will be on display during the Clarke County School District’s biennial art exhibition at the Lyndon House Arts Center. This year's show, "Community: Artworks by Students of the Clarke County School District," will feature the work of students in prekindergarten through 12th grade.

"Our youngest artists explored community helpers: police officers, firefighters, doctors, nurses and others in our community who keep us safe and make our community a good place to live," said David Harvell, H. B. Stroud Elementary art teacher. "Some of our students learned about local artists and created works inspired by them. Athens’ landmarks, the places that make our community unique, inspired others."

Harvell said that high school and middle school students explored "community" as a concept, creating abstract or nonrepresentational works around the theme. This year, to commemorate the exhibit, there will be a full-color catalog printed with photographs of every piece in the exhibition. These catalogs are being provided by First American Bank & Trust, and will be given to each student artist as a keepsake of the event. The bank is also sponsoring the opening reception.

In addition to artwork created by students in at all grade levels, the opening reception will feature musical and dance performances by Clarke County School District students.

The Clarke County School District has held district-wide, biennial art exhibitions since 1983.
