Project 23: Pulaski Creek Greenway and Park

Project Description


This project seeks to convert an abandoned and historic passenger rail line along Pulaski Creek into a public park and/or Greenway path. The Pulaski Creek Greenway and Park is planned to link the Boulevard Historic District, Pulaski Heights neighborhood, Athens Housing Authority apartments, Bethel Church Homes, Denny Towers, and Athens Community Council on Aging with the Lyndon House Arts Center, Thomas Lay Park, and North Oconee River Greenway.

  • In February 2009, the Mayor and Commission approved the Preliminary Master Plan and authorized staff to begin land acquisition negotiations. The property acquired involved acquisition from both CSX and Norfolk Southern Railroad. in late 2010 Norfolk Southern notified The Unified Government that the railroad was not interested in a sale or negotiation of property rights and ended negotiations.
  • Athens-Clarke County staff has received an agreement from CSX Railroad and property acquisition closing is pending final legal process. Construction is scheduled to begin in spring 2013.
