Project 25: North Oconee Rivers green way

Project Description

The North Oconee Rivers Green Way Project project consists of the acquisition of properties and easements on the North Oconee River and development of green way trails for public use. Parcels may provide stream buffer, recreational access to the river, and/or green way opportunities as outlined in the ACC Green Way Network Plan

  • The North Oconee Rivers Green Way project is divided into two separate Green Way trail sub-projects, both of which are partially funded via Federal Grants in addition to SPLOST 2005 funding. The Grants require compliance with the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) procedures and process for all design, environmental review and construction.
    • Sub-project A, the “Trail Creek Segment,” is the segment of the green way from East Broad Street to East Athens Community Park.
      • The Mayor and Commission approved the preliminary construction plans on May 6, 2008.
      • On February 3, 2010, the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) approved the right of way plans and issued a notice to proceed with right of way acquisition. Right-of-way acquisition and final construction plans are in progress and final negotiation of all necessary property rights is anticipated in November 2012. The construction phase is planned for the spring of 2013.

    • Sub-project B, the “North Oconee River Segment,” is the segment of the green way from Dudley Park to College Station Road.
      • The Mayor and Commission approved the Preliminary Construction Plans on May 5, 2009. Special studies and environmental documentation work in accordance with the GDOT process was initiated and on October 7, 2010. GDOT requested additional field studies and information in regard to the archeology studies. Processing of this additional information and final environmental assessments are in progress. Final Plans are scheduled for completion by Dec 2012 and construction start in spring 2013.
  • Final compliance with the GDOT process in progress; construction activities anticipated in the spring of 2013.
