History of Keep Athens-Clarke County Beautiful
Keep Athens-Clarke County Beautiful is a Keep America Beautiful certified program which focuses on litter prevention, beautification, and proper solid waste management. Keep Athens-Clarke County Beautiful, formerly known as Clean and Beautiful Commission, was certified as a Keep America Beautiful system in June of 1989.
Keep Athens-Clarke County Beautiful was formed by an ordinance of the Athens-Clarke County Government. The Board of Directors is composed of eight to twenty county residents appointed by the Athens-Clarke County Unified Government. In addition, four members are appointed by virtue of their office and three members are Ex-Officio.
The Board of Directors serves as chairmen of three standing committees to direct the specific elements of the program into the community: Projects, Public Relations and Finance. Their committee members are individuals in the community who have indicated an interest in working in those areas. The committees and sub-committees are working to focus on results and provide positive reinforcement throughout the community.
Keep Athens-Clarke County Beautiful believes that through education we can make Athens cleaner, more beautiful, and more environmentally aware. Our Unified Government has recognized the need and has made the financial commitment to provide operational funds. The cooperation and enthusiastic participation of our citizens is enabling Keep Athens-Clarke County Beautiful to implement the overall goals of Keep America Beautiful.
